Murphy Addresses Post Office Mailer Regarding November Election

At today’s COVID-19 press briefing, Gov. Phil Murphy attempted to clear up some confusion regarding the state’s mail-in-ballot process and a “mailer” that many New Jerseyans received from the U.S. Postal Service.

Yesterday, New Jersey Secretary of State Tahesha Way Tweeted: “You may have recently received [a] mailer from the U.S. Postal Service. Please note that this mailing is not state-specific and conveys certain information that does not apply to NJ voters.”

“This is a broad-based mail piece that is not specific to New Jersey’s election,” Murphy reiterated today. He said that residents do not need to request a vote-by-mail ballot, as one will be sent directly to them, assuming they are registered voters.

Additionally, residents do not need to worry about return postage for their ballots, since ballots will include a return postage paid envelope.

Murphy also noted that ballots do not have to be mailed, but may alternatively be dropped in a secure county drop box, the location of which can be obtained through one’s county clerk’s office.

“You can also hand your ballot in to one of the poll workers at your local polling place on Election Day,” Murphy said. “You can also do none of this and walk up and vote in person on Election Day using a paper ballot. We have done everything possible to make voting easier and safer given the challenges we are facing from this pandemic.”
