Unique Manufacturers: Wedgewood Pharmacy

Company history:

Wedgewood Pharmacy was established in 1981 by George and Lucy Malmberg. As pharmacists and spouses, they combined their expertise in compounding to innovate in the field of veterinary pharmacy. After George’s passing in 2013, Lucy continued to guide the company until her sale to New Harbor Capital and transition to the board in 2016, when leadership was transitioned to Marcy Bliss, who continues to advance the company’s mission of improving the lives of animals and those who love and care for them. Today, Wedgewood serves 70,000 veterinary professionals and one million animals annually.

Describe your products:

Wedgewood specializes in preparing personalized, compounded medications for animal patients, offering more than 46,000 preparations across various dosage forms including tablets, animal-friendly flavored suspensions, transdermal gels, eye drops, and injectables, tailored to meet the unique needs of a broad range of animals.

What’s new?

In 2023, Wedgewood merged with Blue Rabbit, an online pharmacy platform that provides veterinarians with a white-labeled eCommerce platform allowing better care coordination between the veterinarian, the animal caregiver, and the pharmacy. The service streamlines the prescribing and delivery of pharmaceuticals along with diets and preventatives, directly to pet owners’ doors. Wedgewood also acquired a new FDA-registered 503B outsourcing facility in Ohio, complementing its California facility under the Wedgewood Connect umbrella. The move amplifies the company’s ability to supply a wider array of compounded medications, prepared under FDA registration and cGMP standards, swiftly and efficiently across the nation. It also created dedicated teams to service the unique needs of equine as well as zoo, aquatic, and wildlife veterinarians.

What are your challenges?

Operating in New Jersey, with its headquarters and largest production facility located here, presents Wedgewood with unique challenges including high operational costs and recruitment of a skilled workforce. However, these are counterbalanced by opportunities such as proximity to a vast network of veterinary practices and a population of people who love their dogs, cats and horses. New Jersey’s strategic location also facilitates efficient shipping in the mid-Atlantic region and across the country.
