New Jersey Institute of Technology serves the citizens of the Garden State as a critical resource for education, scholarly and applied research, and economic development in the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), as well as design and the management of technology. NJIT is one of only 32 polytechnic institutions nationwide, so it occupies a unique position as a leader in STEM education and innovation. 

STEM is infused throughout NJIT’s curriculum, with each college – Newark College of Engineering; College of Architecture and Design; College of Science and Liberal Arts; Martin Tuchman School of Management; Albert Dorman Honors College; and Ying Wu College of Computing – having industrial advisory boards.

NJIT has achieved significant milestones since its charter in 1881: supplying well over 25 percent of the state’s engineering workforce, establishing one of the nation’s largest incubators for startup technology and life science companies; developing the world’s leading solar telescope at Big Bear, California; and founding New Jersey Innovation Institute (NJII), which applies NJIT’s intellectual and technological resources to challenges identified by private- and public-sector partners.

NJIT conducts over $130 million in research and has hired more than 100 faculty over the past six years as the university continues to encourage interdisciplinary collaboration in teaching and research. Moreover, the university continues to invest in its facilities offering students and faculty access to state-of-the-art classrooms with cutting-edge technology and support services.

The enrolled 11,400 undergraduate and graduate students benefit from all of the university community’s achievements through an extensive array of co-ops and internships, industry and academic collaborative research, business start-ups, invention and commercialization opportunities. In addition to an excellent education, these experiences are the reason NJIT students graduate earning starting salaries almost 20 percent higher than the national average.

NJIT students are also community-focused, contributing more than 52,000 hours to more than 268 nonprofit agencies during the academic year. In turn, the university has been named to the President’s Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll for six years.

Moreover, NJIT continues to help build the technology pipeline by introducing more than 4,000 pre-college students each year to the STEM fields and preparing them for success in those disciplines through the Center for Pre-College Programs. Those students are predominantly underrepresented females and minorities from the greater Newark area and northern New Jersey.
