Genmab – Biotech Benefits in Plainsboro

An international biotechnology company committed to improving the lives of patients with cancer through the creation and development of differentiated antibody therapeutics to treat the disease, Genmab had maintained a small presence in New Jersey for several years. Then, in 2019, the company made the strategic decision to expand its R&D, commercial and administrative capabilities in the US to accommodate its projected growth. It signed a 10-year lease at the Princeton Forrestal Innovation Park. With the award of a Grow New Jersey incentive from the New Jersey Economic Development Authority, Genmab committed to expanding its US headquarters in the state.

Genmab initially planned to renovate and occupy two floors in one of three five-story buildings at the former Bristol Myers Squibb campus. However, to accommodate its growth, the company expanded the project to include a third floor, for a total of 135,000 square feet. The $20-million renovation included creating cutting-edge office, lab and conference/training spaces, and ample open meeting areas. With commercial, research, development and administrative operations all under one roof, collaboration across functions is both promoted and enhanced.

Committed to doing business in a responsible and sustainable way, Genmab’s new space has met the requirements for Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification for its sustainable design features. To reduce energy use, Energy-Star equipment and appliances were installed throughout. Further, more than 75% of construction waste was recycled instead of being sent to a landfill. More than 300 trade workers were involved in the construction and renovation.

Genmab’s New Jersey employee base already has grown. The company added 102 jobs in 2020, an 82% increase over 2019, for a total of 227 employees in the state. The company anticipates fully utilizing the space as employees begin returning to the office setting, post-Covid. The company and its employees also have become actively engaged in the community, including the support of numerous local relief efforts during the pandemic.
