Rowan University

Camden to become research hub

Rowan University’s recent historic $50 million pledge to significantly enhance medical and bioscience research reflects the institution’s commitment to higher education, health care and New Jersey.

Rowan has committed those funds to establish a robust research presence in the City of Camden during the next 10 years, supporting work among such partners as Cooper Medical School of Rowan University, Cooper University Health Care, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper, the Coriell Institute for Medical Research, Rutgers University and others. The grant is dedicated to academic and research infrastructures and will provide seed money for research and start-up costs for teams working in such areas as cancer, biomedical engineering, neuromedicine and engineering healthy communities.

Rowan’s $50 million commitment contributes to a vibrant and well-established research community in Camden. It provides funding that will act as a catalyst to attract even more organizations, support innovation and accelerate discovery to solve health care problems. All of this is in keeping with Rowan’s role as a public research institution dedicated to conducting research that addresses real-world needs, particularly at the intersection of science, technology, engineering, medicine and business.

While maintaining its historically strong reputation for providing excellent undergraduate education, Rowan has significantly increased its graduate programs and its research presence in recent years. The University has continued to expand initiatives that foster economic development, improve health care and open the doors to more and more New Jersey residents to earn a degree.

Among other recent initiatives that highlight contributions by and activities at Rowan:

  • The $5 million Rowan University Innovation Venture Fund is a unique initiative that provides early-stage funding to members of the Rowan community and entrepreneurs in South Jersey who have developed and tested projects and products that are ready to compete in the marketplace.
  • The South Jersey Technology Park at Rowan University is home to research centers and small through large companies’ sole offices
  • or branches focused on medical innovations, technology development and other initiatives.
  • The Virtual Reality Center at the South Jersey Technology Park serves as a hub for research, featuring a data wall for programming and design development, prototyping capabilities and a 3D immersive environment for collaborative projects.
  • Rowan is one of just three universities in the nation to have both M.D. and D.O. degree-granting medical schools (CMSRU and Rowan’s School of Osteopathic Medicine), and those schools continue to earn accolades in numerous health care areas.
  • Rowan is partnering with Rutgers-Camden in research initiatives at the Joint Health Sciences Center, an innovative facility in Camden that will provide unique education and training opportunities for a new generation of health care providers.
  • Rowan has committed $1 million a year for three years to develop innovative academic curricula to address future workforce needs.
All of these initiatives speak to the progressof the University, which has emerged as the seventh fastest-growing research institution in the United States. This distinction provides a key advantage for Rowan students, particularly those in the STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics), medical and business disciplines-disciplines in which research often paves the way to landing in-demand positions. It also provides an advantage for New Jersey, with the University maintaining long-term relationships and welcoming new partnerships with organizations in the Garden State-and beyond.
