TerraCycle Offers New Sustainable Solutions for Area Salons

Common salon waste like hair foils, empty plastic product containers, and even human hair will now get a new life thanks to new SalonCycle pickup service from TerraCycle

Trenton-based TerraCycle, an international leader in innovative sustainability solutions, is now making it even easier for salons across New Jersey and Eastern Pennsylvania to conveniently and sustainably dispose of common beauty shop waste through the new composting and recycling pickup service offered by SalonCycle.

Originally introduced nationwide in 2021, SalonCycle is a service designed to save common salon waste from landfills and provide stylists and hair professionals with environmentally-friendly options for their hard-to-recycle leftover materials and packaging. Busy salon owners and independent stylists in New Jersey and Eastern Pennsylvania are invited to participate in the new SalonCycle Pickup program to enjoy waste pickups on-demand at a lower price point compared to the shipping option.

“Beauty salons throw away a significant amount of color tubes, shampoo bottles, foils, you name it, because these items are typically hard to recycle,” said Tom Szaky, TerraCycle founder and CEO. “That’s why SalonCycle and its new pickup service are designed to make sustainability achievable for any salon or stylist, allowing them to focus on what matters most — making the future more beautiful for people and our planet.”

With the pickup service, stylists and salons throughout New Jersey and Eastern Pennsylvania can purchase the popular Mixed Salon Waste SalonCycle Recycling Box and/or the Human Hair SalonCycle Composting Box to either recycle or compost the following types of common salon waste:

  • Metals – Used color tubes and foils
  • Plastics – Product lids and containers, rigid plastics, beverage bottles and color tube lids
  • Paper – Magazines, newspapers, paper packaging, cardboard and coffee cups
  • Hair – Human hair (processed and virgin)
  • Breakroom Waste – Coffee capsules, straws, chip bags, candy wrappers and disinfecting wipes
  • PPE – Disposable gloves, face masks and disposable garments

How the SalonCycle pickup service works:

  • Order – Salons and stylists order recycling receptacles which are shipped directly to their salon. For added convenience, busy professionals can now subscribe to their favorite recycling solutions when adding them to their shopping cart.
  • Collect – SalonCycle boxes are placed in designated high-traffic areas throughout the salon to easily collect the various categories of salon products and packaging.
  • Request a Pickup – Once full, the salon contacts SalonCycle Customer Service to schedule a pickup.
  • Recycle – The collected waste is then sent to TerraCycle for processing. The items are cleaned and processed into raw materials that can be remolded to make recycled products like flooring tiles, shipping pallets, and outdoor furniture.
