NJII and Cooper University Health Care Introduce Health Hackathon

New Jersey Innovation Institute (NJII), a New Jersey Institute of Technology subsidiary, announced it is partnering with Cooper University Health Care to sponsor the first New Jersey Social Determinants of Health Hackathon in 2023.

The collaboration aims to explore ways to leverage health information technology to better engage at-risk populations and improve access and health outcomes at both the local and state level. This event brings together stakeholders from across New Jersey to look at ways in which health IT and new technologies can improve the lives of underserved communities.

This initiative will not only bring together IT and healthcare professionals, but also benefit from contributions from the fields of social work, education, housing, nutrition, workforce development, law and business, among others.

“After learning about Cooper’s mission for this event, I knew this would be a great opportunity to support on behalf of NJII while leveraging our student and faculty resources at NJIT. The goal of NJII as the state designated entity to manage the New Jersey Health Information Network is to advance healthcare interoperability throughout the state and provide services that allow us to assist in such initiatives working to improve the wellbeing of the patients while providing access to providers,” said Jennifer D’Angelo, senior vice president and general manager of NJII’s Healthcare Division. “This is an exciting partnership, and I am eager to work alongside Cooper University Health as well as entrepreneurs and innovators that support this objective.”

Cooper, supported by a range of local, regional, and national community, government and business partners, is seeking teams for this hackathon. Participants from diverse perspectives — including health care, education, nonprofit or corporate sectors — are welcomed and encouraged to participate.

Registration for the hackathon opened last month and will conclude with a competition on Nov. 10 at the Cooper Medical School of Rowan University.
