On July 9th – 11th, Neshanic Valley Golf Course in Neshanic Station will host the 118th New Jersey State Golf Association Amateur Championship sponsored by Provident Bank.
This prestigious championship is the oldest in the state and will pit New Jersey’s top amateur golfers on Neshanic Valley’s Lake Nine (1-9) and Meadow Nine (10-18) courses.
“[Hosting this tournament] is an incredible honor for our system, the park commission and the incredible employees who run this on a daily basis,” Mark Caliguire, president, Somerset County Park Commission said.
The Somerset County Park Commission operates five golf courses spread throughout the county, including: Warrenbrook in Warren Township; Green Knoll in Bridgewater Township; Quail Brook and Spooky Brook in Franklin Township; and Neshanic Valley in Neshanic Station.
Neshanic Valley, the commission’s newest facility which opened in 2004, has been ranked by Golfweek as one of the Top 50 Municipal Courses in the United States. It features 27 holes plus a 9-hole Academy Course, the Callaway Golf Performance Center, and the Learning Center with a double-ended driving range, short-game practice area, large putting green and two practice holes.
“In the golf world, this golf course is still very young, yet in that time span it’s been extremely active with the NJSGA, the Metropolitan Golf Association (MGA) and the United States Golf Association (USGA),” said Robert Ransone, director of golf at Somerset County Park Commission.
Some of the championships that Neshanic Valley has hosted include the NJSGA’s Men’s Public Links Championship in July of 2014, the 2007 MGA Men’s Public Links Championship, the 2009 NJSGA Women’s Amateur Championship, and the 2012 USGA Women’s Public Links Championship.
“Having had a chance to play the golf course for the first time today, I really understand why golf experts, gurus and publications consider this to be among the top 50 public golf facilities in the country. It’s a world-class facility that is second to none in New Jersey,” said William E. Frese, president of the New Jersey State Golf Association.
Additionally, at a championship preview event held yesterday, Neshanic Valley recognized its new catering company, Crave Events Group, which is the full-service catering and events division of Landmark Hospitality.
The preview celebration was held in Neshanic Valley’s second floor banquet room which is available for outings, banquets, and community events. The banquet room is complemented by an outdoor deck with a 270-degree view of the golf course, the historic Neshanic Valley, and the nearby Sourland Mountains.
