Community College Offers Financing Course with a Bloomberg Certification Pathway

Brookdale Community College has added a new course to its curriculum, the Fundamentals of Finance that offers students the opportunity to earn the Bloomberg certification of Basic Specialist. The three-credit introductory course is designed to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of the financial system while equipping them with hands-on skills through creating and managing an investment portfolio.

Professor Phyllis T. Shafer, MBA, highlighted the practical aspects of the curriculum, stating, “This course goes beyond theoretical knowledge. Students will have the chance to apply what they learn in real-world scenarios, giving them a competitive advantage in the professional world of Business.”

Upon successful completion of the Fundamentals of Finance course, students will:

  1. Understand basic concepts to recognize financial activity in real time.
  2. Analyze financial information for decision-making and problem-solving.
  3. Apply basic mathematical skills to organize financial information.
  4. Use technology, including exposure to the Bloomberg terminal, to evaluate financial markets.
  5. Create a portfolio of financial assets to demonstrate understanding.
  6. Earn the Bloomberg certification of Basic Specialist upon completion of the Bloomberg Market Concepts self-paced online course.

The certification offered through Bloomberg Market Concepts covers Terminal Basics, Economic Indicators, Fixed Income, Equities, Currencies, and Portfolio Management. This will provide students with valuable credentials for their chosen field of study.

To enroll in the Fundamentals of Finance course, students must have completed the prerequisite course, Introduction to Business – BUSI-105, or receive approval from the professor.

The course will equip students with essential knowledge of investment setting, they will explore various investment vehicles, including securities, mutual funds, real estate, fixed income, and foreign markets. Students will engage in fundamental and technical analysis, developing their skills to make informed financial decisions.

The addition of Fundementals of Finance reflects Brookdale Community College’s commitment to providing students with relevant and practical education, ensuring they are well-prepared for the challenges of the modern workforce and for success in the evolving landscape of finance.
