Charles C. Calabrese, Jr. is promoted to CEO at Gerber Metal Supply, a company specializing in flat-rolled sheet metal and mechanical welded tubing. Calabrese, who also holds the title of president, joined the company in 1977 as an inside sales representative. He was promoted through the years to office manager, general manager, president and COO. He became a minority shareholder of the company in 1990.

Calabrese is a lifelong friend of company chairman, Glenn Gerber. “I knew ‘Gerb’ since I was six years old,” he recalls. With a background in banking, Calabrese says he knew nothing about steel when Gerber was looking to hire him.

At the company, Calabrese maintains overall responsibility for purchasing and inventory control, but, operationally, some of these duties will be placed on department managers who will report to him. “The financial responsibilities for the company will remain with me, and most of that is the budgetary and planning side of the business,” he says.

He jokes that his biggest challenge will be reducing Gerber’s role in everyday warehouse operations.

Gerber Metal, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2013, operates from a 55,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art facility in Readington. Its customers include original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and sheet metal fabricators in industries such as: building, lighting, heating and air conditioning, electronic enclosures, computer cabinetry and displays.
