Unicom Buys Former Merck Headquarters

The vast 1.2-million-square-foot former Merck corporate headquarters in Readington, set on more than 1,100 acres (and which Merck abandoned in 2014 in favor of offices in Summit), has now been sold to California-based UNICOM Corporation, a division of UNICOM Global. UNICOM is a corporate giant comprised of more than 40 diverse entities involved with flexible IT solutions. The company already has offices in Parsippany and Plainsboro.

“UNICOM is very excited to acquire this world-class IT Real Estate property as our regional headquarters for the New York and New Jersey region,” said Mr. Corry Hong, founder, president and CEO of UNICOM. “Our commitment to expand and extend our IT real estate portfolio and our services for industry leaders, especially those in the banking, insurance, technology, telecom, pharmaceutical and biotech sectors, is reflected in this investment.”

The future of the Readington property had long been questioned, and this transaction is heralded by many in business, government and local communities alike.  The Merck site had often been cited among a pattern of companies abandoning large office parks in favor of smaller facilities often located in or near “24/7” metropolises that the Millennial Generation (now the largest demographic in the United States’ workforce), statistically desires.

The UNICOM deal is anticipated to close in October 2018.
