Port Authority to Complete Runway Rehabilitation at Newark Liberty

The Port Authority on Saturday will begin the final 10-day phase of work to complete the rehabilitation of one of Newark Liberty International Airport’s major runways – a $97.3 million project creating more than 500 jobs and approximately $152 million in regional economic activity.

Runway 4L-22R will close for the completion of runway grooving and installation of pavement lights and is scheduled to reopen late on the evening of Tuesday, September 30.

As work continues on Runway 4L-22R, the airport’s other runways, 11-29 and 4R-22L, will be available to reduce the potential for delays on flights. Runway 11-29, typically the least used of the airport’s three runways, will see more use during this 10-day period, resulting in more planes over communities in Jersey City and Bayonne. The Port Authority is working with both the FAA and the airport community to communicate the work schedule in an effort to lessen the impact to their customers, as the agency maintains a state-of-good-repair on its infrastructure and implements delay reduction initiatives.

The initial phase was completed ahead of schedule this spring on the bulk of work, included repaving, improving taxiways to get planes on and off the runway faster and overhauling lighting and electrical systems.

Serving more than 35 million fliers annually, Newark Liberty International Airport is a vital economic engine for the bi-state region, supporting more than 156,000 jobs, $8 billion in wages, and generating more than $22 billion annually in sales activity.
