Founded as Hackensack Water Company in 1869, United Water has a distinguished history of providing its residential and commercial customers with safe water and reliable service.

The company is a subsidiary of Suez Environnement, a provider of innovative solutions for complex water and wastewater treatment systems that serves millions of people and industries worldwide.

Drawing on the resources of a global network for research, development, management and service, United Water provides services to approximately 1.7 million people throughout New Jersey.

One of the largest and most modern water treatment facilities in the country, the Haworth Water Treatment Plant opened in 1989 and is capable of pumping up to 200 million gallons of water a day through 2,000 miles of mains. The plant is one of the largest in the nation to use ozone, a form of oxygen, to purify drinking water. As part of a $100-million upgrade in 2009, the state-of-the-art facility added Dissolved Air Flotation to its technological processes.

United Water’s public-private partnerships and comprehen-sive asset management contracts enable municipalities to outsource the management and operation of their water and wastewater systems. In 1996, United Water and Jersey City entered into the largest public-private water service contract at the time that has resulted in the daily delivery of 80 million gallons of water to nearly 300,000 residents. Daniel Becht, executive director of the Jersey City Municipal Utilities Authority, commented that “United Water provides a significant benefit to the residents of Jersey City by delivering high-quality drinking water at a cost that is fair and affordable.”

Today, a growing number of municipalities are turning to United Water to help identify solutions to their infrastructure and investment challenges. To that end, United Water created SOLUTIONSM, an innovative business model that blends United Water’s operational expertise with private financing and long-term vision.

United Water remains committed to continuously improving its operational and environmental performance. As CEO Bertrand Camus said, “Maintaining clean, sustainable water supplies is the single most important contribution to public health and is essential to creating vibrant local economies.”
