Anniversary Milestone – Celebrating 20 Years With You!

Every year since 1998 has been a proud and significant one for the Newark Downtown District (NDD), but this year is a different kind of special. Twenty years ago, the NDD was organized by a Newark Municipal Council ordinance with the promise to “service the Downtown community in formulating, promoting, and implementing the economic revitalization” of the Central Business District. Twenty years later, the NDD has gone above and beyond by adding vibrant color, ambience, detail, and culture to the downtown community. 

What started as a Clean & Safe program has transformed into so much more. Just ten years ago, the staff consisted of only 13 Ambassadors, for 56 blocks of downtown Newark. Around the same time, our streetscape project broke ground and in a couple hard work-filled years, our downtown’s aesthetics totally upgraded. Expanded borders, granite curb cuts, historic-style light poles, street-pole banners, parklets, planters, pedestrian malls, a community farmers market, and other annual events all play a major part in the growing downtown you see today. In 2018, there are now up to 60 Ambassadors at a time, broken up into teams of Clean, Safe, Quality of Life, Horticulture, and Special Projects, all caretakers of 110 blocks of businesses, residentials, Newarkers, and visitors.

The community has been a major part of our growth and accomplishments and for that we thank all of those who live, labor, and leisure within our downtown. Downtown Newark is filled with culture, work opportunities, restaurants, nightlife, galleries, shopping, and personality. While the city continues to grow with new redevelopment projects, incoming world-renowned businesses, luxury residential buildings, and more – there are still over 350 years of art, culture, and flavor that you can take advantage of today. The Newark Downtown District invites you to celebrate our 20th Anniversary by visiting our city and becoming a part of the Newark renaissance.
