NJHA, New Jersey Business Partner to Support Healthcare Scholarship Fund

The healthcare sector is New Jersey’s second largest employer and has consistently remained one of the few bright spots in job creation and retention since the Great Recession.

And the demand for healthcare jobs continues. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services projects a need for 21,000 additional nurses in New Jersey by 2025. Meanwhile, the Association of American Medical Colleges anticipates a shortage of 2,500 physicians in the Garden State by 2020. Other in-demand jobs in healthcare, both now and projected into the future, include therapists, physician assistants, home healthcare aides and pharmacists, among others.

For more than 30 years, the Health Research and Educational Trust of New Jersey (HRET), an affiliate of the New Jersey Hospital Association, has done its part to support healthcare careers through its Health Careers Scholarship. The annual award presents scholarship dollars to New Jersey students in an accredited health career program such as nursing, allied health fields and healthcare administration.

For the 2015 scholarship, New Jersey Business magazine has partnered with NJHA to support these aspiring healthcare professionals by donating a portion of the advertising proceeds from this special section to the scholarship program.

“We’re very grateful to New Jersey Business for joining us to support the next generation of New Jersey’s healthcare professionals,” says NJHA President and CEO Betsy Ryan. “For both families and employers, high-quality healthcare that is both affordable and accessible is a top priority. And you can’t have that quality healthcare system without an adequate and well-educated workforce.”

HRET’s scholarship program is proud to have granted more than $160,000 in scholarships in the healthcare field since 1983. What started as a small event to assist healthcare administration students has developed into today’s scholarship program, which is open to students pursuing both undergraduate and graduate degrees in the fields of nursing, allied health and healthcare administration.

To qualify for the scholarship, applicants must:

  • Be a New Jersey resident
  • Be enrolled in an accredited health career program
  • Maintain a grade point average of 3.0 or better
  • Demonstrate financial need.

The application deadline for the 2015 scholarship is June 15. Visit www.njha.com/education/scholarships for more information.
