One of only 32 polytechnic universities nationally, New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT) plays a critical role in innovating and shaping New Jersey’s and the nation’s future through research, teaching, economic development and public service. 

Rated by the Carnegie Classification as one of only 131 universities receiving the R1 designation for the highest level of research activity. 

NJIT conducts approximately $162 million in research through more than 70 specialized research institutes, centers and labs. These are organized into four research clusters:

  • life sciences and engineering
  • sustainable systems
  • data science and information technology
  • a broad transdisciplinary category created to address problems such as intelligent transportation systems resilience and point-of-care healthcare devices
  • #1 nationally, according to Forbes, for student upward economic mobility
  • Top 2% nationally for return on educational investment
  • 11,400 STUDENTS in 50 bachelor’s, 59 master’s and 19 doctoral degree programs
