The State Legislature established the Casino Reinvestment Development Authority (CRDA) to oversee community and economic development projects funded through a 1.25% set-aside of gaming revenue. CRDA responds to the changing economic and social needs of Atlantic City by encouraging business development and permanent job creation, and facilitating a vibrant economic employment environment.
In 2011, through legislation, CRDA was charged with creating and overseeing the Atlantic City Tourism District. The same legislation merged the Atlantic City Convention & Visitor’s Authority with CRDA, including ownership and operation of The Atlantic City Convention Center and Boardwalk Hall, and giving CRDA additional responsibilities as a destination marketing organization.
In partnership with private and government agencies, casino operators and local businesses, CRDA conducts a broad campaign to improve the Atlantic City visitor experience.
Initiatives include ensuring a clean, safe and attractive destination by increasing lighting on the Boardwalk and throughout the city, providing professional Ambassadors to help visitors, landscaping and creation of pocket parks throughout the city, and funding aggressive code enforcement initiatives.
CRDA has spurred economic development through funding successful projects such as The Quarter at Tropicana, Tanger Outlets, Jimmy Buffett’s Margaritaville at Resorts, The Wave Garage and Arts Garage, Bass Pro Shops (opening in 2015) and a new conference center at Harrah’s Atlantic City (currently under construction), among many others.
CRDA also supports a year round calendar of events including the Garden State Film Festival, Miss America Pageant, Atlantic City Airshow and Challenge Triathlon.
Initiatives include programs focused on community and social services, including a unique Single Point of Entry program to funnel numerous social services through one organizational system.
“I’m proud of the work we’ve accomplished since coming aboard,” said John Palmieri, CRDA Executive Director. “As Atlantic City continues to evolve, we’ve set a good many things in motion to put the city on the path to continued success.”
