This road upgrade project brought to life a critical infrastructure improvement to 1.9 miles in Camden County. Considering the safety to bikers, motorists and pedestrians alike, the Chapel Avenue (CR 626) improvement project spans a stretch of road from Haddonfield Road to Kings Highway in Cherry Hill Township. Under the stewardship of County Engineer Kevin Becica, design engineers French & Parrello Associates of Wall developed a creative solution to calm traffic in the area while creating bicycle lanes and new sidewalks for pedestrians.
The $3.8 million improvement project was completed by Hammonton-based Lexa Concrete, LLC, and created approximately 15 construction jobs for the duration. Utilizing a “Complete Streets” approach for design, the concept employs the consideration of all users of the road, not just vehicles. With schools and parks within the footprint of the roadway, travel lanes were narrowed to slow traffic and provide space for improved sidewalks and the addition of bike lanes, as well as creating safe pedestrian crossings throughout. The design also utilized cobblestone and landscaped islands, parking lanes, and handicap accessibility improvements. Completed in September of 2021, the Chapel Avenue improvement project successfully achieved Camden County’s goals and objectives within budget and schedule. Bringing a safer, more pleasant experience to pedestrians, cyclists and motorists alike, this roadway re-imagining project is worthy of recognition for both its planning and its execution.
