Park Avenue BMW brought its unmatched style to a South Hackensack neighborhood when it finished the second phase of two construction projects across from each other at 490 and 530 Huyler Street. With a $10.5-million investment, the dealership transformed two white elephant warehouses into complexes worthy of the BMW brand. In 2009, BMW opened its 60,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art Service and Parts Center at 530 Huyler; in 2015, it inaugurated its Delivery Service Center at 490 Huyler.
The projects became necessary when the company outgrew the old service center located behind its Rochelle Park showroom.
Unique in the industry, the Service and Parts Center embraces environmental sensitivity and sustainability as core values. It features two 8,000-gallon tanks that collect rain water, which then is used to irrigate the property’s landscaping and flush toilets. Radiant heat in the cement floors takes advantage of heat rising to keep the building warm, and staff and customers comfortable. Additionally, waste engine oil – even oil that is squeezed from oil filters – is recycled on-site and used by high-efficiency burners to create heat, with lower stack emissions than from a single family home.
The Delivery Service Center building design was inspired by the BMW’s dashboard. Customers pick up their cars – purchased in Rochelle Park – and have a personal concierge who explains their BMW’s features to them. They also can relax in the center’s lounge with coffee and bagels, free WiFi Internet access and even a home theater to watch a movie.
The dealership took great care to be a “good neighbor” in the way the buildings were set and buffered next to the adjacent properties. This good neighbor policy was not new to Park Avenue BMW; it’s been a hallmark of the dealership’s culture since the agency was founded by the late Roy Sommerhalter, Sr. in 1978.
The site employs 110 full-time and 15 part-time workers.
