Following a two-year search for its new headquarters location, Plymouth Rock Assurance Company, a leading home and automobile insurance provider in the Northeast, concluded that the perfect site would be in Woodbridge. Initially planning to be a tenant in the ideally situated Class A Mack-Cali building on Main Street, Plymouth Rock decided to purchase the building and consolidate employees there from offices in Red Bank and Berkeley Heights, virtually equidistant from each prior location.
As a multi-tenant building, 581 Main had no amenities except a café in its basement. Transforming it to Plymouth Rock’s New Jersey HQ would change that. Its $7-million renovation of the 125,000 square-foot building included a new cafeteria with a built-in conference center and lounge area. Using folding partitions, the cafeteria can be separated for smaller meetings, or by adding the adjacent main lobby it becomes a giant town hall space. A similar option is available with training rooms on an upper floor.
The entire building is wireless, resulting in efficiency and flexibility in changing work locations among offices and the dozens of huddle, focus and conference rooms. The building’s infrastructure was fully upgraded and a generator was installed to support the entire facility, including computers, if necessary. Full vertical fiber was provided through the hi-rise core in anticipation of future occupancy as existing tenants move out. Today, some 700 employees work in the building; plans are to add another 100.
By centralizing its New Jersey operations in Woodbridge, Plymouth Rock reports it has enhanced its organizational effectiveness and efficiency. The company is also confident that its location in the active and highly desirable Central New Jersey business corridor, served by major highways and mass transit, will enable it to compete for top talent in the metropolitan area, and will also result in continued growth in New Jersey with new opportunities and expanded operations into neighboring states.
