Allen Flavors, Inc. – Effervescent in South Plainfield

After gaining years of experience in the flavors industry, Joey Allen decided to start his own company in 1990: Allen Flavors, Inc., a custom beverage formulator that supplies high-quality ingredients to the food and beverage industry. Allen Flavors began operations in a three-room office in Kenilworth. Today, following the $24.3-million renovation and expansion of a former industrial building, Allen Flavors occupies more than 100,000 square feet designed to meet the growing company’s manufacturing and sales needs. 

Allen Flavors began its transition to South Plainfield in 2013 with the purchase of a vacant 76,000-square-foot industrial building located on more than four acres. Another 6,000 square feet would be added to allow for the employment of nearly 100 people. The construction work would be done in phases, so the company could efficiently move its operations from Edison to South Plainfield. In Phase I, the structure was converted into a liquid blending and warehouse facility. Renovations to some 30,000 square feet included installing explosion-proof fixtures and extensive upgrades to the mechanical equipment. Located near I-287, the company was able to begin efficiently shipping products from here to beverage producers throughout the country starting in 2015. 

Phase II construction – the design-build phase – began in 2016, with Allen Flavors leadership closely involved in bringing the vision of its corporate headquarters to life. Renovations and additions to the facility included a large and welcoming reception lobby, upscale executive offices, a cafeteria, warehouse and state-of-the-art liquid blending laboratories equipped for production and R&D. The new space also features upscale conference rooms, a corporate training center, and tasting rooms. 

Nationally recognized today as a leader in the beverage development industry, producing flavors for popular sports drinks, coffees, teas, juices, spirits and mixers, Allen Flavors now can be found elsewhere in grocery aisles, as it provides ingredients for candies, fruit prep, syrups, yogurts and baked goods.
