Atlantic Rehabilitation Institute – Madison’s New Medical Facility

For many Morristown residents, the “old All Souls Hospital” building evokes fond life-cycle memories. But after 40 years of Atlantic Health System (AHS) ownership, most recently as its in- and outpatient rehabilitation facility, AHS concluded that the renovated former acute care hospital posed significant challenges to further modernization and innovative care, and decided to create a facility that would set new standards in rehabilitation medicine in New Jersey.

In 2019, AHS, in a joint venture partnership with Louisville, KY-based Kindred Healthcare, which provides healthcare services, completed and opened the new Atlantic Rehabilitation Institute (ARI), a $24-million, two-story, 38-bed, all private room rehabilitation hospital, at the Giralda Farms office park off Route 124. The first standalone hospital to be built from the ground-up by AHS, the institute is located on approximately an acre of an AHS-owned, 40-acre parcel that will be developed into a health services campus.

The new hospital, where more than 70 full- and 60 part-time employees are located, greatly expands the breadth of capabilities and resources available for treatment and preparing patients to return home and resume everyday functions. It includes a state-of-the-art gym with ceiling lifts and bionic, assisted movement systems to help patients regain movement, a main gym featuring simulated home spaces, a dedicated ADL (Activities of Daily Living) suite that enables patients to spend time in a simulated home environment, a brain injury unit, and a therapeutic courtyard that features different surfaces patients will encounter in the “real-world,” such as gravel, ramps and stairs, curbs with wheelchair cutouts, and even a putting green.

With nearly 800 patients admitted annually at the prior site, estimates are that the new ARI will be able to serve 25 percent more patients. The complex also includes 90 ground-level parking spaces, which provides easier access to the facility.
