Founded in Princeton, New Jersey in 1964 by AIA Gold Medalist and Princeton University Professor Michael Graves, MGA&D has enjoyed a wide-ranging design practice that encompasses master planning, architecture and interior design. With a staff of 50 and offices in Princeton, New York City and Washington, DC, the firm undertakes projects for public and private clients across many industries. 

One of their strengths is a holistic front-end planning process that makes sound business sense for their clients. This early phase reconciles the scope, design direction, budget and schedule at the outset of a project, and is key to creating successful outcomes. For example, at Don Bosco Preparatory High School in Ramsey, New Jersey, MGA&D started with a campus master plan that produced the greatest immediate impact and set a clear framework for the future. The new buildings and landscape transformed the center of the campus from a parking lot to a collegiate-style quadrangle. MGA&D’s high-technology 3D visualization tools made fundraising easier by creating renderings and animations so realistic that it is hard to tell the concept drawing from a photograph of the completed building. 

In 2018, MGA&D was celebrated by the Newark Museum for its over 50 years of service to the institution and honored by a Downtown New Jersey Award for their most recent project that modernized the Museum’s historic entrance and re-organized the visitor experience with a new orientation center and renovated galleries. The project demonstrated that the thoughtfulness of a design, whatever the size, can have a large impact on the social and economic life of the city.
