In October 2017, Mallinckrodt Pharmaceuticals, a leading global specialty pharmaceutical company, dedicated its Specialty Brands office campus in Bedminster. The new space at the Somerset Financial Center is home to a consolidated workforce of nearly 500 that supports marketed and development products in the company’s hospital therapies, autoimmune and rare diseases businesses.
Originally built in 1999, the Somerset Financial Center consisted of two three-story buildings totaling approximately 230,000 square feet. Through its $38-million investment, Mallinckrodt upgraded the buildings to Class A office space for a single tenant. More than 70 percent of the space is open floor plan that facilitates work collaborations, with most high-wall elements built around the core to allow natural light. The complex also includes a full-service cafeteria, fitness center and data center.
The old fluorescent lighting was replaced with energy-efficient LED lighting and a new daylight harvesting control system to automatically adjust overall light fixture lumen output relative to the natural light, thus reducing the number of fixtures that are on at any time. This system is tied into a master lighting control panel that turns all lighting on and off at scheduled times during normal business hours, further reducing energy consumption. During non-business hours, lighting is controlled solely by motion detectors, limiting lighting to only those areas where movement is detected, excluding code-required night lighting.
Set on approximately 23 acres, the site’s landscape also needed attention. With Mallinckrodt’s sensitivity to the environment and utilizing natural light, dead or damaged trees were removed and replaced with a mix of indigenous evergreen and shade trees. Trees that obscured the front of the buildings were removed to allow more natural light.
In all, the company has added more than 99 new jobs in Somerset County and has designed the site to accommodate potential growth over time.
