More than what ‘Meats’ the Eye in Mount Olive

In 2014, Fratelli Beretta purchased 12 vacant acres in Mount Olive’s International Trade Center (ITC) for its new, 180,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art meat packaging facility. The company chose Mount Olive since it was reminiscent of the bucolic Lombardy area in the northern Italy town of Barzano, where the company was founded in 1812. Not only did the 200-year-old company find the swift streams and fresh air of its home, but the climatic conditions were similar, making it ideal for the dry curing and production of its salami and prosciutto.

Furthermore, the ITC’s location adjacent to Interstate Route 80 and its accessibility to Interstates 280 and 287 would allow the company to create an efficient distribution network. Fratelli Beretta also found a qualified labor force in the area, and it appreciated the welcome and timely responses it received from the township administration.

Fratelli Beretta opened its doors at 750 Clark Drive in the township’s Budd Lake section in 2015, following an investment of more than $30 million that provided employment for some 200 construction workers.

Today, the facility employs more than 80 people and has increased the assessed value of the property from $2,470,000 to $13,744,000, which has helped Mount Olive stabilize its tax rate.

Moreover, Fratelli Beretta has demonstrated its affection for the township and is enfolding Mount Olive in its “sibling” family in a number of ways. In 2017, Fratelli Beretta initiated a campaign for the township to become a sister city with Carpegna, Italy. This year, the township and Fratelli Beretta plan to collaborate to bring a prosciutto festival to Mount Olive. And what could be more demonstrative of familial affection than marrying names: To pay homage to Mount Olive, Fratelli Beretta has started the Mount Olive product line of assorted meats.
