Home Base Remains in Hackensack

After several years of steady growth, Joseph M. Sanzari, Inc. determined it needed new, state-of-the-art corporate offices – and decided that its new headquarters would remain in the City of Hackensack, where the company has been based for more than 40 years. The site for the attractive, functional and sustainable facility would be on West Franklin Street, at an underutilized heavy equipment yard in a mixed commercial/residential neighborhood.

The 10,000-square-foot building consists of 20 offices, conference rooms and support spaces. Large communal areas include a staff lounge/break room and covered outdoor seating area.

Sustainability was an important aspect of the facility’s LEED certification design. With the high-performance building envelope and high efficiency mechanical systems with smart controls, the building uses less energy and is highly efficient. Large windows in each office, full height glass between offices and corridors, LED lighting, daylight harvesting and interior finishes with low VOC content add to the quality of the work environment. The total project cost approximately $5 million.

With the JMS headquarters staying in Hackensack, its positive economic impact on the city remains strong. Fifty full-time professional employees remained in the community, and the countless clients, local vendors, the more than 300 workers employed around the state and others who regularly visit the office continue to spend time in the community, supporting restaurants, stores and entertainment venues, particularly downtown, which has been under redevelopment for several years.

The project also contributes significantly to the city’s tax revenues, as the value of the formerly underutilized property was increased. Additionally, the area around the site frequently flooded during heavy rains. JMS worked with Hackensack officials to resolve the flooding issues at no cost to the city.

JMS also has been an active and leading member of the region’s corporate community. Among its most charitable activities is the Joseph M. Sanzari Children’s Hospital, a nationally-ranked children’s hospital at Hackensack University Medical Center.
