A Healthy Remedy for Rockaway

Since its founding in 1892, Morristown Medical Center was virtually synonymous with its host community, Morristown. But in 2015, Atlantic Health System, Morristown Medical Center’s parent company, recognized the need to bring high-quality, accessible medical and imaging services to the Rockaway area. Though only 13 miles from Morristown, that distance could be inconvenient for routine procedures, walk-in or emergency visits, or for treating chronic conditions that require frequent visits.

Located next to the Rockaway Townsquare Mall at Route 80 and Mount Hope Avenue, the modern, mirrored Health Pavilion opened in April 2016 at cost of $20 million, and is home to a range of diagnostic testing services and best-in-class healthcare services, including family and internal medicine, maternal fetal medicine, pediatric orthopedics, breast screening and surgery, general surgery, cardiac imaging, pulmonary function tests, diabetes/endocrinology, rheumatology, infusion, diagnostic, vascular, radiology and laboratory services, sleep and sports medicine, physical therapy, urogynecology, urology and walk-in services.

The facility already has caught on in the community. From seeing only a few hundred patients each month when the pavilion opened, the facility posted a record 9,511 visits in January. It also has created 190 jobs for physicians, nurses, medical assistants and environmental staff, and as its services grow, so will the need for more employees.

In addition to offering health and wellness services, the pavilion opened three community rooms on its third floor for Atlantic Health System and surrounding communities to host health education, wellness and other community events.

The pavilion also has become actively involved in the community. In 2017, it partnered with several Rockaway businesses to establish the Rockaway Area Chamber of Commerce to foster a strong local economy and business expansion in Rockaway Township, Rockaway Borough, Dover, Wharton and other nearby municipalities. Since its organization, the chamber has grown to more than 50 members.
