125 Years of Designing Great Communities

In 1891, there were no presidents carved on Mount Rushmore. Ellis Island had not yet opened for business, and the US flag had 44 stars. And in 1891, the architectural firm that would become SSP Architects opened its doors in Somerset County.

As SSP celebrates its 125th year in operation, the architectural and interior design firm reflects back on its long heritage of providing excellent service and partnership to both public and private clients across the state. From the rehabilitation and renovation of older buildings to the design of new LEED-certified facilities, SSP understands that communication throughout the design and construction process remains a critical component of project success, much as it was in 1891.

The architects and designers at SSP continually strive to create great communities and buildings. By embracing the notion that architecture is a tool to support our daily lives, whether working, learning, teaching, playing or healing, SSP partners with their clients to develop appropriate solutions and meet each project’s unique objectives. The balance among traditional considerations such as budget and schedule; resource use implications; and occupant wellbeing and productivity, can only be achieved when the entire team is moving in the same direction.

SSP designs for the real world. Having provided services in almost every county in the state, and for countless school districts, municipalities and other public and private agencies, SSP is able to work with a wide variety of stakeholders to understand the critical factors that define project success – all while navigating the regulatory landscape.

SSP’s longevity is a testament to the firm’s integrity in the areas of architectural design, project management and construction administration; a reputation for delivering effective solutions to complex issues; and a long-standing commitment to practical and sustainable design.

Looking forward to the next 125 years, the leadership at SSP continues to embrace new ideas and technologies, while remaining true to the core values that have driven the firm for the last century.
