Property taxes are an important revenue raiser for state and local governments, but median tax bills can vary widely between states and even between different counties within a state.
Three New York state counties that surround New York City (Nassau, Rockland, and Westchester) have the highest property tax bills in the country, with medians exceeding $10,000. New Jersey counties also rank near the top, with median bills in Passaic, Bergen, and Essex counties all exceeding $9,000.
Using the most recent Census data (2011-15), Tax Foundation Policy Analyst Morgan Scarboro calculated the median property tax bill for each county in the US and displayed the results in an interactive map.
