Seton Hall to Offer Certified Financial Planner Cert. Program

South Orange-based Seton Hall University has been approved by Certified Financial Planner Board of Standards, Inc. (CFP Board) to provide a new financial planning professional certificate program.

The CFP Board is a Washington, D.C.-based independent 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to benefit the public by granting, upholding and promoting the Certified Financial PlannerTM (CFP®) certification.

The university will offer the Certified Financial Planner Professional Certificate Program online with live instruction from experts in the financial services industry. The program is open to the public and designed for working professionals.

“CFP Board is pleased to approve the program at Seton Hall as a CFP Board Registered Program,” said Kamila Elliott, CFP®, chair of CFP Board’s Board of Directors. “As student interest in financial planning as a career continues to grow, we anticipate that Seton Hall’s program will contribute significantly to the number of qualified candidates seeking to attain CFP® certification, the standard of excellence for competent and ethical financial planning.”

“Our CFP® Professional Certificate Program was developed with working professionals in mind,” said Mark Schild, M.B.A., assistant dean and finance instructor in the Stillman School of Business. “As a CFP Board Registered Program, we provide comprehensive instruction with an emphasis on quality client service.”

Seton Hall’s professional certificate program will be offered online October 2022 – August 2023 with live, synchronous instruction from CFP®-certified experts in the financial services industry. The program curriculum consists of six required courses — such as insurance, investment and retirement planning — and one Capstone review course that delivers information about areas in financial planning for both beginning and established practitioners. Students can complete the program within a 10-month period and are then eligible to sit for the CFP® Certification Examination in November 2023.

There are only 3,700 CFP professionals registered in New Jersey, which has a population of more than 8.8 million. To address the demand, the CFP Board is working to build and diversify the ranks of financial planners to meet the needs of increasingly diverse consumers.

“For those considering a career in financial planning, earning a CFP® certification sets them on the path to a rewarding career in a rapidly growing field,” said Schild. “For those already in the financial services profession, earning the CFP® certification is a proven investment in future growth and helps sets them apart from the competition.”
