SCORE Starts 199 New Businesses and 212 Jobs

The Northeast New Jersey chapter of SCORE, a national organization of business professionals who volunteer their time to provide free mentoring and low-fee workshops to emerging and established entrepreneurs, helped start 199 new businesses and create 212 jobs in Northeast New Jersey during the 2015 fiscal year, according to a recent survey.

“We’re proud of these numbers, particularly the fact that we’ve created more jobs this year than last,” said SCORE Northeast New Jersey Chairman Lew Marchiona.

Fifty-seven percent of the total number of clients served by SCORE Northeast New Jersey during this period were already in business, and 56 percent of them increased their revenue. “This is further proof of strength in our local economy because the launch of new small businesses brings more employment opportunities to the community,” Marchiona said.

SCORE Northeast New Jersey expanded its services to Passaic County entrepreneurs in 2013 and recently began mentoring clients in the Passaic County Economic Development Department office at 930 Riverview Ave. in Totowa. “We’re excited about this opportunity to progress in assisting as many business people as possible,” Marchiona said.

Nationally, SCORE assisted in starting 53,377 businesses and creating 65,125 jobs. Fifty-six percent of the clients who consulted SCORE In 2015 were women, 31 percent were minorities and 12 percent were veterans.

SCORE is a resource partner of the U.S. Small Business Administration. It costs SCORE $150 to help create one business and $122 to help create one job. However, SCORE clients return $60 to the Federal Treasury for every federal dollar appropriated to SCORE.
