School of Medicine Graduates to Help Physician Shortages

At a time hospitals and health systems nationwide continue to face staffing shortages, 102 medical students from Hackensack Meridian School of Medicine (HMSOM) are saying “yes!’” to a career as a physician as they prepare to graduate June 6 and officially begin their medical careers in residency programs across the country.

The medical students, whose experiences were uniquely shaped by the COVID-19 pandemic, include 75 students who came from the 2020 cohort of the medical school and 27 who completed their education in three years.

HMSOM is poised to do its part in helping to train the physicians of the near future, even as the industry faces challenges due to a limited pipeline of new healthcare professionals and the impacts of the pandemic. In fact, since the HMSOM was founded, applications and enrollments have only increased. The School of Medicine’s inaugural class in 2018 included 60 students. The latest incoming class numbers are more than 160, admitted from greater than 6,000 applicants.

Members of the 2024 HMSOM graduating class have accepted residences at top institutions across the country. The specialties the students matched into include: internal medicine, pediatrics, radiology – diagnostic, surgery, neurology, emergency medicine and family medicine.

The HMSOM Graduation will take place Thursday, June 6, 2024 at 5 p.m. at the New Jersey Performing Arts Center – 1 Center Street, Newark.
