Prosecutor Grewal Nominated as NJ Attorney General

Governor-elect Phil Murphy today nominated Bergen County prosecutor Gurbir S. Grewal to be the state’s attorney general. According to Grewal’s official online biography, he was appointed acting Bergen County prosecutor in January 2016, and sworn in as Bergen County prosecutor in November 2016.  He oversees approximately 265 persons, and also has “supervisory authority” over about 2,700 law enforcement officers in the county. Grewal was named prosecutor by Governor Chris Christie.

Grewal previously worked in the United States Attorney’s Office for the District of New Jersey from 2010 to 2016, and headed the economic crimes unit there for several years, among an array of other accomplishments.

Of note, Grewal will become the first Sikh attorney general in United States history.

Governor Chris Christie issued the following statement regarding Governor-Elect Phil Murphy’s proposed nomination of Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir Grewal as Attorney General of New Jersey:

“I commend Governor-elect Murphy on selecting Gurbir Grewal for nomination to be New Jersey’s next Attorney General. Gurbir’s intellect and experience is what attracted me to him and what led me to fight entrenched interests to make him Bergen County Prosecutor. I am sure it is those same qualities that attracted the Governor-elect to him as well. His tenure, almost without exception, has been exemplary. I am confident he has the skills necessary to be an Attorney General we can be proud of in New Jersey.”

Bergen County Executive Jim Tedesco released the following statement regarding the announcement:

“Phil Murphy has made an outstanding choice in nominating Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir Grewal to serve as New Jersey’s Attorney General. As Attorney General, I know that Prosecutor Grewal will continue to demonstrate the same commitment to public service and the rule of law that he has exemplified throughout his career.”

Grewal holds a bachelor’s degree from Georgetown University and a law degree from William & Mary.
