NJ’s Day-Over-Day COVID-19 New Case Growth Rate is Declining

At today’s daily COVID-19 briefing, Gov. Phil Murphy unveiled statistics that revealed a decline in the state’s growth rate of new cases day-over-day. On March 30, the day-over-day growth rate of new cases was 24%, compared to a roughly 12% day-over-day growth rate today.

“Our efforts to flatten the curve are starting – and I emphasize starting – to pay off,” Murphy said. “Our job now is to keep flattening the curve until the day-over-day increase is 0%.”

Murphy further emphasized the fact that while it’s a positive sign that the curve may be flattening, it’s imperative to continue following the social distancing measures currently in place, while also pointing out that the infection peak is still “a week and a half away at least.”

“While we aren’t anywhere close to being out of the woods yet, we are clearly on the right path to get there,” he said.

Despite the seemingly positive news, there were a total of 3,663 new cases confirmed in the past 24 hours, bringing the statewide total number of infections to 41,090. The state also surpassed 1,000 total deaths (1,003) after 86 new fatalities were also confirmed.

Other Announcements

Murphy also signed an executive order that allows retired public employees to return to work without impacting their pension status. He said the aim was to remove all roadblocks that may prevent someone who is willing to help fight the virus in any capacity such as retired law enforcement officers, nurses or workers in employment and labor offices.

The governor also said that President Trump today granted permission to New Jersey to have access to beds on the USNS Comfort currently docked in New York City, allowing even more potential hospital capacity if needed.
