The Newark Downtown District (NDD) has relocated its headquarters and other operations to The Berger Organization’s Military Park Building at 60 Park Place in Newark. NDD’s 11,400-square-foot commitment is the latest in a series of new leases and renewals at the signature 89-year-old, 250,000-square-foot property.
The NDD, Newark’s special improvement district of the central business area, is a 501 (c) (3) non-profit organization dedicated to revitalizing downtown Newark by improving the economic viability of the central business district, funded through a special assessment on district commercial and residential properties. The NDD is overseen by a board of trustees consisting of business and property owners within the district, representatives of non-profit organizations, as well as municipal officials and staff.
The NDD’s 12-year commitment at 60 Park Place includes the entire 5,000-square-foot 21st floor, which will be the organization’s executive offices. A 1,400-square-foot space off the lobby, which has its own street and lobby entrances, will be utilized as a police substation, and a 5,000-square-foot basement space will also be utilized by the police, as well as NDD’s Ambassador Program.
“We are pleased to welcome our newest tenant, Newark Downtown District, to 60 Park Place,” said Brendan Berger, vice president of The Berger Organization. “We are excited to add them to our tenant roster and are looking forward to the improvements they will be making on Park Place and the Military Park area.”
“The building is centrally located to areas that we serve,” said Anthony McMillan, CEO of NDD, which employs more than 65 in administration and in the field. “It’s just a beautiful building, and after we created a search committee that looked at several other locations, it was determined that this best suited our needs.
“The Berger Organization is a class act – they do things at a different level,” said McMillan, who anticipates a move-in by September. “The way the property is managed is quite impressive.”
Tenants at the 21-story office tower enjoy on-site parking, a fitness center, conference facilities, and on-site ownership and management. The Military Park Building offers commanding views of the surrounding city, New York skyline and Military Park, where a multi-million-dollar redevelopment recently was completed. The property is proximate to Newark Liberty International Airport and major thoroughfares. It is within walking distance to the New Jersey Performing Arts Center and Penn Station, which provides 20-minute NJ Transit and PATH service to midtown and downtown Manhattan.
