New Procedure for Correcting Myopia Offered in NJ

Norden Laser Eye Associates of Ridgewood becomes the first laser vision correction practice in New Jersey to offer ReLEx® SMILE minimally invasive laser vision correction. Close to one-million ReLEx SMILE procedures have been performed worldwide to date.

This procedure was cleared in September 2016 by the FDA to be performed in the US. It has been 20 years since the FDA last cleared a new laser vision procedure for use in the U.S.

Developed by ZEISS, the ReLEx SMILE procedure utilizes the VisuMax® femtosecond laser to create a thin, contact lens-shaped layer just beneath the surface of the eye, which is then removed through a pencil-sized incision, correcting the patient’s vision.

The VisuMax femtosecond laser, which Ridgewood-based Norden Laser Eye Associates acquired, is the only laser that can currently perform the ReLEx SMILE procedure.

According to Dr. Richard Norden, “Because this laser technique is so minimally invasive, we’re able to treat patients who – often because their jobs are quite physical – weren’t suited to earlier forms of laser vision correction. These include firefighters, police officers, and athletes who participate in contact sports – all of whom are likely to be struck in their eyes.”
