New Medical Director Named at Cancer and Blood Disorders Center

Sari Jacoby, MD, has been appointed as the new medical director of the Frederick B. Cohen, MD Comprehensive Cancer and Blood Disorders Center at Newark Beth Israel Medical Center (NBI), an RWJBarnabas Health facility and a clinical component of Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, the state’s only National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Dr. Jacoby succeeds Alice Cohen, MD, who has transitioned to section chief of Hematology. Dr. Cohen led the center, which was founded by her father, since 1998 and worked tirelessly to ensure patients always had the best treatment options available to them close to home. Dr. Cohen will continue to provide critical leadership in hematology services and the Center’s sickle cell program, which she developed.

“We are extremely grateful to Dr. Cohen for her leadership and dedication to her patients and the cancer program at NBI and look forward to working closely with Dr. Jacoby to continue to enhance cancer services, bringing the most advanced treatment options such as clinical trials to patients in the Greater Newark area,” said Susan Solometo, MBA, System Vice President for Strategy and Operations, Oncology Services, RWJBarnabas Health.

Dr. Jacoby is a board-certified hematologist/oncologist and internist. She joined Newark Beth Israel in 2011, from Long Island Jewish Medical Center where she completed her internship, residency, and fellowship. She received her medical degree at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

Cohen, MD Comprehensive Cancer and Blood Disorders Center at NBI will continue on its trajectory of growth begun by Dr. Alice Cohen,” said Andrew M. Evens, DO, MSc, FACP, System Director of Medical Oncology and Oncology Lead for the Combined Medical Group, RWJBarnabas Health and Associate Director for Clinical Services, Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey.

Patients at the Frederick B. Cohen, MD Comprehensive Cancer and Blood Disorders Center have access to the most advanced treatment options including clinical trials, novel therapies, precision medicine and immunotherapy due in large part to the partnership with Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey.

Dr. Jacoby’s clinical interests include gastrointestinal malignancies and complex blood disorders such as hemophilia and sickle cell disease.
