Genova Burns LLC announced that Michael C. McQueeny, Esq., previously an associate with the firm, has been promoted to Counsel. McQueeny, an accomplished thought leader in the field of legal cannabis, will continue his role as co-chair of the Firm’s Cannabis Practice Group. His promotion is reflective of the enhanced level of leadership and responsibility he has been providing to cannabis clients over the last several years.
“The Genova Burns team has been proud to call Michael our colleague and friend, and we have watched his professional career exemplify all to which the firm aspires for our team. He has achieved the ‘trifecta’ in the private practice of law – applying a team player philosophy to creative lawyering and a strong work ethic,” said Angelo Genova, Co-Founder and Managing Partner of Genova Burns, LLC. “Michael has become a thought leader and trusted advisor in the development and growth of our cannabis practice, and instrumental in the success and development of our clients in this space. This promotion is an acknowledgement of Michael’s unique abilities, reflecting his knowledge, skill and expertise, and his development as one of the region’s top minds in this emerging legal specialty.”
In his capacity as co-chair of Genova Burns’ Cannabis Practice Group, McQueeny is active in advising businesses – including investors, processors, distributors, retailers and cultivators – on various aspects of the legal cannabis industry. McQueeny counsels clients on issues regarding licensing, funding, and operation, as well as advising cannabis and CBD-related entities on federal and state legislation, regulations, and local laws governing the growth, processing, sale and use of cannabis. He has advised several of the larger multi-state operators, and has spoken widely on topics affecting the industry on panels, in print and digital media, and on television.
“I am thankful for the support of my friends, colleagues, and mentors at Genova Burns, who have provided me with the support to develop and grow our cannabis practice group, and, in turn, allow us to become a regional leader in this field,” said McQueeny. “New Jersey has one of the most competitive cannabis marketplaces in the country, necessitating skilled counsel with an understanding of the statutes and regulations that govern it, and the creativity and ingenuity of how to be a step above the competition. I am proud of what Genova Burns has provided to our clients in that regard, and to be a steward of the responsible evolution of these laws nationwide by assisting in its growth and development.”
Aside from cannabis, McQueeny litigates complex commercial matters in both state and federal courts. He handles a wide range of business litigation matters, including issues involving commercial disputes, shareholder/LLC membership disputes, real estate, foreclosures, tax, bankruptcy, and debtor and creditor rights actions.
McQueeny is a graduate of Syracuse University and the Villanova School of Law, and was a 2018 Fellow of Lead New Jersey. Prior to joining the firm, he served as a law clerk for the Honorable Patricia K. Costello, A.J.S.C., Assignment Judge for the Superior Court of New Jersey, Essex Vicinage. During law school, McQueeny served as a Research Assistant for Villanova University School of Law Dean Doris Brogan, a Judicial Intern for the Hon. Dennis M. Cavanaugh of the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey, a legal intern with Fair Share Housing Center, and as a student attorney with the Pennsylvania Innocence Project.
