MD Anderson Cancer Center Opens Multi-Service Outpatient Unit in Camden

MD Anderson Cancer Center at Cooper has expanded cancer services in the region with the opening of a new 13,000-square-foot multi-service outpatient unit at its flagship Camden location. The new unit, constructed in previously vacant shell space on the center’s top floor, offers a range of diagnostic and treatment service suites to expand and complement existing services at the cancer center.

“When we partnered with MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston almost a decade ago, we knew our partnership would quickly grow to become the number one choice of consumers in the region by offering outstanding comprehensive cancer services. This expansion, which will offer multi-service outpatient care, demonstrates that our commitment to cancer patients is only growing and strengthening,” said George E. Norcross III, chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Cooper Health System, Cooper University Hospital, and MD Anderson at Cooper.

“This expansion of MD Anderson at Cooper demonstrates the increasing demand among New Jersey residents to receive advanced cancer care close to home and our expert team of cancer specialists continue to provide high-quality, effective care to tens of thousands of residents every year,” said Kevin O’Dowd, JD, co-CEO of Cooper University Health Care.

“The success and fast growth of MD Anderson at Cooper is due to our dedicated team of cancer specialists, nurses, technicians, and support staff all focused on providing advanced, compassionate care and with this new facility our team will be able to treat many more patients in our conveniently located facility, close to home,” said Anthony J. Mazzarelli, MD, JD, MBE, co-CEO of Cooper.

New services located on the fourth floor of MD Anderson at Cooper include:

Malignant Hematology Clinical Suite – Patients with blood cancers (leukemia, lymphoma, myeloma) will receive care in this dedicated suite. In addition, the suite includes a large, fully equipped procedure room for bone marrow biopsies and other procedures.

Hydration and Blood Production Infusion Suite – This dedicated suite for patients needing IV hydration and blood product infusion services includes six semi-private infusion chairs (with massage features) and one private room.

Full service physical rehabilitation facility – In this space, patients have access to prehab and rehab physical therapy services. In addition to open space with therapy equipment, there are two private treatment rooms.

Services include:

  • Pre- and post-surgical physical therapy to build strength, endurance, and improve range of motion.
  • Occupational therapy to regain abilities for activities of daily living that might have been affected by cancer or cancer treatment – range of motion, fine motor skills, and alternative ways of doing things.
  • Speech and swallowing therapy for patients with head and neck cancers or other cancers where their disease or treatment has affected their ability to speak and swallow.
  • Lymphedema prevention and treatment.
  • Services provided by specially trained therapists from the Cooper Bone and Joint Institute.

Interventional Radiology Suite – The new Interventional Radiology Suite provides MD Anderson at Cooper patients with convenient access to image-guided interventional procedures such as port placement (for the delivery of chemotherapy) and port removal, thoracentesis, and paracentesis performed by interventional radiologists on our cancer care team.

The interventional radiologists will use the new C-arm fluoroscopy – a medical imaging technology used to visualize patients’ anatomy during procedures. The C-arm’s special semi-circular design allows the physician to move it easily and take images of any part of the patient’s body to guide the procedure.

Space consists of five open bays, one private bay, one exam room, fluoroscopy room, consult room, nurses’ station, and a provider collaboration room.

In addition to the clinical services, the connected space includes a check-in desk with bright, a spacious waiting area, a full break room with lockers for staff, multiple blanket warmers and other patient amenities, and a nurse call system.

“We are excited to offer these new additions to our Camden outpatient center. They complement the wide range of diagnostic, treatment, and support services we already provide at this location, giving patients easy access to the key cancer services they need in one convenient location,” said Generosa Grana, MD, director of MD Anderson at Cooper.
