Inspira Names Baston as New Medical Director for Inpatient Detox Center

Inspira Health has named Kaitlan Baston, M.D., M.Sc., a board-certified addiction medicine physician, as medical director of its new inpatient acute medical detoxification and addiction treatment center. Located in Inspira Health Center Bridgeton, the 20-bed unit provides alcohol and drug detoxification services, including Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT), for people who require medical supervision during the withdrawal process. For many people with chronic health conditions, such as diabetes or heart disease, medically supervised detox is the only safe and medically prudent option.

Baston earned her medical degree at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia and received a master’s degree in neuroscience at King’s College in London. She completed a family medicine residency and addiction medicine fellowship at Swedish Cherry Hill, University of Washington Family Practice Residency Network in Seattle.

Baston also holds clinical, academic and leadership positions at Cooper University Healthcare, serving as division head of Addiction Medicine, assistant professor of Medicine, and medical director of Government Relations.

Dr. Baston became interested in addiction medicine while caring for hospitalized patients who were struggling with substance use disorders during her medical residency. She recognized that both health care providers and patients were suffering from the lack of specialized training in addiction for health care professionals. These experiences prompted her to pursue an academic career in the field.

On the state and national level, Baston has helped secure more than $4 million in grants related to improving and expanding services for people with substance use disorders, including a program that specializes in the care of pregnant and parenting women with substance use disorder and their children. She is currently participating as a subject matter expert in Project ECHO, a tele-mentoring program, focused on improving care for substance exposed infants. She has also given her time to serve on state-level commitees to improve access to care through legislation and expansion of resources. In this new role, Baston looks forward to contributing to evidence-based addiction care in the inpatient detox setting.
