Governor Christie Names Robert Lougy as Acting State Attorney General

Governor Chris Christie announced the appointment of Robert Lougy as Acting State Attorney General, succeeding John J. Hoffman effective March 14.

Lougy currently serves as First Assistant Attorney General and is a 10-year veteran of the Department of Law and Public Safety.

“Robert is one of the most dedicated public servants in my Administration and I am proud to announce his appointment as Acting Attorney General,” Governor Christie said. “Robert brings a wealth of experience and a deep understanding of the office he will now lead. His knowledge and commitment to public service will be a tremendous asset to the people of New Jersey. I look forward to having him join my cabinet.”

During his tenure, Lougy previously served as chief of staff to the Attorney General, deputy director and acting director of the Division of Law. He manages a workforce of 7,400 employees and has litigated numerous high-profile matters in both State and federal court, providing legal counsel on some of the legal matters central to this Administration, including public employee entitlements, education, housing and public safety.

“I am deeply honored and humbled that Governor Christie has appointed me to lead the Department of Law and Public Safety as Acting Attorney General,” said Lougy.  “I vow to advance the department’s great work, especially by building upon the important relationships of trust that we’ve developed with our community partners, law enforcement colleagues, and stakeholders and continuing to collaborate with them to make our cities and neighborhoods safer.”

Hoffman, who has served as Acting Attorney General since 2013, is leaving the Administration for a position as senior vice president and general counsel at Rutgers University.

A resident of Cranbury, Lougy graduated from Pennsylvania State University in 1994 and received his law degree from Columbia Law School in 2002. Prior to joining the Attorney General’s Office, he worked as a public defender in Essex County.
