Imperial Machine & Tool Named SBA Regional Subcontractor of the Year

Imperial Machine & Tool Co., a 75-year-old state of the art machining, fabricating, and assembly facility specializing in advance manufacturing techniques was awarded the U.S. Small Business Administration’s 2018 Regional Subcontractor of the Year Award for Region II.

In making the announcement, SBA Regional Administrator Steve Bulger said Imperial Machine & Tool Co. competed against several other firms from Region II, which encompasses New York, New Jersey, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands for the award.

According to Bulger, the Columbia-based company was nominated for the award by Jessica L. Straub, small business liaison officer for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Lincoln Laboratory, a Department of Defense Research and Development laboratory that conducts R&D aimed at providing solutions for projects that are critical to the country’s national security.

Imperial Machine & Tool Co. was selected for the award based on criteria that measures a firm’s technical and management capability; financial strength; customer interface and support; innovativeness of products or services offered; and the ability to deliver quality services and products on time and at a competitive cost to the U.S. Government.

“Each of our employees shares a sense of commitment and pride in their work that contributes to the success we enjoy today and has put us in a position to be recognized as SBA’s 2018 Regional Subcontractor of the Year,” said Chris Joest, president of Imperial Machine & Tool Co. “To be nominated by MIT Lincoln Laboratory, a well-respected and renowned R&D facility, is truly an honor, and I can honestly say each of us here is grateful to the SBA for this recognition and prestigious award.”

Established in 1943 by Michael Joest, Chris’ grandfather, the company now spans four generations, with Chris’ son Christian helping to navigate the world of Advanced Manufacturing and heading up the company’s business development activities.

Today, Imperial Machine & Tool Co. has 40 employees and several dozen multi-axis Computerized Numerical Control (CNC) machine tools and support equipment housed in a 33,000 sq.-ft. state-of-the-art manufacturing and test facility.

In addition to CNC Machining, the company offers its customers metal additive manufacturing services (Metal 3D Printing), precision welding, refractory metal working, engineered plastics and exotic materials, precision sheet metal & complex assembly work, and custom vacuum & optical equipment fabrication.  The company’s customers come from the semiconductor, technology, energy, aerospace and defense industries.

Imperial Machine & Tool Co. competed with nine other subcontractors across the country for the title of SBA’s 2018 National Subcontractor of the Year. The national award was presented to David Evans and Charles Dewey of Evans Capacitor Company of East Providence, R.I. by SBA Administrator Linda McMahon during National Small Business Week ceremonies held in Washington, D.C. earlier this month.
