Christopher Martell Appointed President of ESA Environmental Consultants

In 2019, Middlesex-based ESA Environmental Consultants celebrated 30 years in business. Recently, the company reached another significant milestone with the appointment of Christopher Martell as president.

Martell joined ESA in January of 2016 as a project manager. Within months, he was promoted to director of project management and, in 2017, he became vice president of Technical Services. Martell’s rapid rise in the ranks at the company is attributed to his unfaltering display of loyalty and competence as a leader. His extraordinary handling of company staff and the day-to-day operations of the business during the coronavirus pandemic was the deciding factor for CEO Stephen Fauer in accelerating Martell’s ascension to president of the company. Throughout the crisis, Martell again proved himself to be highly competent, keeping the company fully staffed and operational with no interruptions to schedules nor decrease in quality of service to ESA’s clients.

While still a fledgling project manager with ESA, Martell behaved like a leader, identifying areas for improvement and executing strategic plans to advance the company both technologically and financially. Now, as president of the company, Martell will utilize his leadership skills to prepare ESA for major growth. This means streamlining internal procedures and operations, refining company financials, and hiring additional key personnel. While CEO Stephen Fauer continues to provide guidance and mentoring along with acting as the company’s chief client strategist, Martell now assumes responsibility for managing the company’s 12-person staff and all day-to-day operations.

When asked about some of the challenges he’s faced since joining the company, Martell responded, “The first really tough task I took on at ESA was rebuilding the staff from the ground up. Our human resources were lacking the skill and stability I like to see in an organization, so we ‘cleaned house’ and now have an enviable Dream Team of dedicated and highly talented scientists and project managers.”

The advent of the coronavirus pandemic created a career-defining challenge within the company. Martell continued, “What’s been incredibly difficult is maintaining productivity and business operations during COVID. Going into lockdown, we developed a plan, and we had the proper communications tools in place, and not only did we survive, we thrived! Our three highest revenue months during my tenure with the company were March, April, and June of 2020.”

As for ESA’s future, CEO Stephen Fauer adds, “ESA has never been more strategically poised for growth and success than it is now, right at this moment. With our skilled staff, state-of-the-art technology, and ESA’s ability to implement remedial strategies that other consultants fail to identify, ESA is set to enter the next decade like a bolt of lightning!”

In conclusion, Martell added, “I’ve been around the block and I’ve worked at a lot of companies. But I’ve never worked with such a stellar group of people who all share the same vision. It’s a remarkable experience!”
