Hoboken-based Caryl Communications has launched a free Small Business PR Toolkit developed as part of the agency’s 40th anniversary theme of giving back and paying forward. The public relations primer is designed as a resource for entrepreneurs and small business startups, offering insights and tips for helping companies find and share their news.
“When it came time to commemorate and celebrate our milestone anniversary, the Caryl team was enthusiastic about focusing on philanthropy,” said Sandy Crisafulli, president. “As part of that, we wanted to do something for the business community, which has been our lifeblood for four decades. That led to the development and launch of this toolkit.”
Caryl Communications’ Small Business PR Toolkit features “Communication 101 Tip Sheets” for news releases, fact sheets and media kits, advice for working with journalists, newsworthy topics, and more. The digital toolkit – available at caryl.com/small-business-pr-toolkit – is offered at no cost; access to the various downloads requires an email sign-in.
According to the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, small businesses represent 43.5% of the nation’s gross domestic product. The majority of small businesses – over 80% –operate as one-person organizations. Crisafulli noted that, as a boutique firm, Caryl Communications recognizes both the challenges and extraordinary potential that come with being a small business.
“We are often asked by companies of all sizes what PR is all about and how it can help them grow their brand,” she said. “We also understand that in the early stages, entrepreneurs are often doing everything for their business and allocating time and financial resources to work with a PR partner may not be realistic.”
Caryl Communications’ educational resource is designed as a timesaving, idea-sparking guide for those beginning the PR journey. The initial content is largely focused on leveraging earned media (i.e. press coverage) for public relations – with future additions planned.
Caryl Communications’ 40-year anniversary commemoration has also focused on supporting community causes. Central to that outreach effort, Caryl team members were asked to choose 40 nonprofits – ones that are meaningful to them – and the company made monetary donations to the selected organizations.
“Our ‘40 for 40’ has been a special project for us, and one that reflects our culture of caring and compassion,” said Jamie Platt, assistant vice president of operations, who coordinated the philanthropic initiative. “We learned more about, or were introduced to, many great causes while gaining a further understanding of the importance of these organizations in the lives of our team members.”
