Following November 2016 convictions for fraud and conspiracy, Bridget Anne Kelly (a former aide to Governor Christie) and Bill Baroni (the former deputy executive director of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey), were today sentenced to prison for their roles in the infamous George Washington Bridge shutdown of 2013. Kelly was sentenced 18 months in prison, while Baroni received 24 months.
The bridge closing gripped not just New Jersey residents, but – at times – the nation, with a saga of fierce denials on the part of those accused of closing the George Washington Bridge for alleged political retaliation against a Fort Lee mayor whose city relied on vehicular bridge access – and a seven-week courtroom trial that found Baroni and Kelly convicted of multiple charges.
David Wildstein (a Republican strategist and former Port Authority of New York and Jersey official) pleaded guilty to his role in the scenario, served as a witness for the prosecution during the trial, and is awaiting sentencing.
