Newark Liberty Serves as International Gateway to US

As one of the major international gateways into and out of the United States, Newark Liberty International Airport, owned by the City of Newark and operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, serves approximately 35 million passengers annually from all over the world. Home to more than 50 air carriers accommodating at least 1,200 arrivals and departures daily, the airport handled 307,514 domestic flights; 91,885 international flights; and 11,519 general aviation flights, totaling 410,918 flights in the 12 months ending January 2014.

Not only is Newark Liberty a leading hub for international and domestic travelers, it is a prominent center for worldwide freight and cargo. With more than 1.4 million square feet of cargo space and 290 acres dedicated to cargo operations, cargo facilities include – but are not limited to – a United Airlines cargo handling facility, a Federal Express cargo complex and a United Parcel Service (UPS) package handling and distribution center. In 2013, approximately 242,533 tons of international freight and 413,633 tons of domestic freight totaling 656,216 tons, traversed its way to and from the airport. Newark Liberty’s second largest tenant, Federal Express, handled the bulk of the cargo load with 306,227 tons of freight in the 12 months ending January 2014. The airport’s largest tenant, United Airlines, ranked third in terms of total freight at 90,490 tons, right behind UPS, which totaled 129,763 tons.

International and domestic air cargo around the world is only expected to increase over the next decade, and Newark Liberty International Airport can handle the “load,” supporting more than 156,000 jobs, $8 billion in wages, and generating more than $22 billion annually in sales activity.
