Company History: Shovlin Mattress Factory was established in 1972 in Garwood. It has always been factory direct, concentrating on high-quality mattresses. A main company goal was to provide a premium product at a fair price. Shovlin Mattress Factory continues to focus on quality and providing what customers want. Marlene and Richard Shovlin purchased the business in 1987. Marlene was the office manager since 1978, while Richard was a police officer in Westfield for 27 years. Shortly after Richard retired from the police department, the two decided to purchase the company. Prior to Shovlin’s purchasing the company, their son Ronald started working there at the age of 13. He has been running the company for the last 10 years, and prides himself in maintaining a family atmosphere. Several employees have been with the company for more than 30 years. Maintaining the family environment is one of the core values of Shovlin Mattress Factory. Currently, Kara, Ron’s wife, is managing much of the marketing for the company. Their boys, Grayson and Colby, can also be seen on the delivery truck or working in the factory.
Old & New: As the industry had moved to one-sided mattresses, Shovlin wouldn’t budge. Sticking to the traditional 2-sided mattress has given the company an edge over the competition: a longer lasting mattress that people can count on. The old adage, “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it,” certainly applies here. Shovlin only uses top-of-the-line materials all sourced from US companies, most of which are fellow family-owned businesses in the tri-state area.
The company will be opening a second location by the end of this year, with a third location to open by the end of 2025. It expects to help potential customers by bringing showrooms closer to them, so they do not have to travel as far as they currently do (people fly in from Texas just to try its mattresses). Shovlin Mattress also expects to more than double its revenues and bring on a minimum of four new team members. Ron’s main goal is to create generational wealth for all of his employees so they will be able to flourish at home and at work.
