Unique Manufacturers: Serratelli Hat Company

Company history:

Serratelli Hat Company has more than 100 years of tradition in Newark. Today, we are a fifth-generation family-owned maker of hand-crafted cowboy hats. Dean Serratelli is the fourth generation to own Serratelli Hat Company and the great, great grandson of our founder, Pio Serratelli. Dean first learned the hat business as a child, working the factory floor with his father and uncle. In 1997, he expanded the business into retail and launched the Serratelli Hat Company as it is known today.

Describe your products:

Serratelli hats are handmade in our Newark workshop. Many of our artisans have worked with us for more than 25 years. Our hats are immensely popular, and they have been worn by folks including Brad Paisley, Miranda Lambert, and Brittany Kerr. We’ve been featured by the White House and have made appearances in the Anchorman movies and The Real Housewives of Orange County.

What makes your products special?

Serratelli hats help the owner exude confidence and personality. Every stitch and strand are symbols of quality and craftsmanship. Our customers say the hats feel better in hand, and with our proprietary fit and finish, Serratelli hats are more comfortable to wear all day long.

Serratelli hats are colorfast and waterproof in all colors, so they retain their original hue without fading or running.

What role does technology play?

We make our hats in the same way they were made more than a hundred years ago. More than 50 pairs of hands shape, stitch, and form a Serratelli hat before it reaches the final owner. We love modern technology in the office, but the hats are made using the tools that have worked for generations.

Challenges & opportunities?

We live and work in New Jersey, so space is always a premium! However, this is a place we can grow, scale, and hand-craft thousands of hats every week. It is a privilege to live and work in one of the greatest states in the world!
