Describe your business. Liberty Lake Day Camp has grown into one of the largest children summer day camps in New Jersey, becoming an integral childcare component for 1,000 families annually. Our Liberty Lake Foundation acts as a community partner, with a “campership” program that gives less privileged children the opportunity to attend numerous camps in South Jersey.
What empowers you to operate your business every day? We are committed to growing leaders and building better people; teaching the 21st century character skills that aren’t taught in schools. We accomplish this in a completely outdoor, electronics-free setting.
What is your biggest business challenge? Giant warehouses encroaching us, extra traffic, water drainage issues, and natural beauty being replaced by modern ugliness. All this is coupled with, at times, an oppressive state regulatory climate.
Describe your most recent successes: When the pandemic began, we ran a virtual camp program in the spring, and took the approach that if we were able to open camp during the summer of 2020, we were damn well going to do it. With the support of NJBIA, and our hard-earned connections, we successfully convinced the state to allow summer camps to open. It may have been the greatest business decision of my life.
How do you maintain a positive cash flow? As a seasonal business, we do everything we can to keep money flowing year-round. We take refundable deposits at the end of the summer (for the next summer), we offer a pay-in-full discount in late fall, deposits become non-refundable in the winter, and pay-in-full is in the early spring, with no refunds after April 1.
