Rutgers University-New Brunswick Ranks 33rd Among World’s Top Universities

Rutgers University-New Brunswick  has been ranked 33rd among the world’s top 1,000 universities this year by the Center for World University Rankings – marking a dramatic rise in the ranking of the university’s flagship campus.

Rutgers-New Brunswick also ranked 24th among the 229 U.S. universities that the center included in the world’s top 1,000.

This is the third year that the center has published its rankings. Rutgers rose 10 places in the worldwide rankings this year, up from 43rd last year and 72nd in 2012. It rose six places in the U.S. rankings, from 30th last year and 49th in 2012. The rankings place Rutgers ahead of nine Big Ten peers, including Penn State, Ohio State and Purdue.

The center describes its rankings as the only global performance tables that measure the quality of student education as well as faculty prestige and the quality of faculty research without relying on surveys and university data submissions. Specific characteristics the center measures include: faculty and university alumni who won major international awards, alumni employment, faculty publications, highly cited research and patents filed.

Rutgers scored notably high in alumni employment rank, at 33rd, and quality of faculty as measured by international awards, at 31st.

Rutgers’ rise in the rankings follow a series of highly visible successes under the leadership of President Robert Barchi, including: the integration of Rutgers with most of the schools, centers, institutes and patient care units that made up the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey; Rutgers’ entry into the Big Ten and its academic counterpart, the Committee on Institutional Cooperation; and the university’s most comprehensive capital construction program in 50 years, funded in large part by the statewide bond act approved by New Jersey voters in 2012.
